A Conversation with Eric Schmidt (에릭 슈밋과의 대화)

미국에서 MBA를 하다보면 가장 좋은 것 중 하나는, 

말로만 듣던 유명한 분들이 가끔 찾아와서 학생들에게 자신들의 삶과 생각을 공유해 주는 기회가 있다는 것 입니다. 

제가 the University of Texas at Austin (텍사스대)를 다니던 2년 동안에도 많은 분들이 학교를 찾아주셨었는데요. 

여기에는 전 구글 CEO였던 Eric Schmidt (에릭 슈미트)가 학교에 왔을 의 이야기를 나눠볼까 합니다. 

아래의 내용은 제가 "A Conversation with Eric Schmidt" 행사에 참여하면서 

혹시나 내 인생의 지표가 될만한 영감을 받지 않을까 싶어 메모해 놨던 내용인데요. 

그냥 가감없이 공유해 봅니다. 

 

(1) 진행방식

  - 전반 30분: 에릭 슈미트 (Eric Schmidt) 아저씨와 사회자로 나온 Joshua Baer간 대화

(2) 사회자와의 대화 (전반 30분) 
Moderator로 나온 Joshua Baer가 스스로를 Austinpreneur라고 지칭할만큼 오스틴에 애착이 많은 사람이라서 그런지 오스틴 관련 이야기로 시작했고, Eric Schmidt 아저씨 역시 자기가 여기서 좀 살았었기에 잘 안다고 답변하는 것으로 대화의 문고리를 염. 

 

Joshua Baer의 직업이 창업가들을 돕는 것이라 그런지 start-up 관련 질문을 많이 함. 

개인적으로는 에릭 아저씨의 인생 스토리를 더 듣고 싶었는데, 딱히 그런 쪽의 대답을 할만한 질문을 던지지는 않았음. 

 
<주요 질의응답>

1. 니가 이자리까지 올 수 있었던 원동력이 머냐? 

=> Intellectual Curiosity (Most Important)

항상 호기심을 가지고 주위를 살피고, 새로운 것을 배우려고 노력해야 한다. 난 지금도 열심히 이것저것 배우고 있다. 

 

2. 우리들이 너 같이 성공하려면 어떻게 하는게 가장 좋을까? 

=> Great leaders generate great followings. Try to find very smart people and try to follow them.

 

3. 성공한 entrepreneur가 될려면 어떻게 해야할까? 

=> In the tech industry, there are important waves, such as virtual reality, personal computers, artificial intelligence, and so on. 

Founders need a variety of things, such as a team, funding, and so force.

During that time, there are many important decisions. 

Then, finally, founders will face maybe the most important decision -- whether to exit or not. 

At this time, smart people don’t usually sell their companies but try to find why their business models will be sustainable. 

 

이후 University entrepreneurship program이 엄청 잘 되있다라든지, 

Google에서는 금요일 오후를 어떻게 보낸다는 둥 시덥지 않은 이야기들로 넘어갔다가 

4. Joshua가 "누군가 가까운 사람이 사업을 하려고 고민한다면 어떤 종류의 사업을 추천하겠는가?"라고 질문하자, 이렇게 대답함. 

=> The cost for creating a software company is very low now. Consider a platform business.

 

이런 말 잠깐 한 후 Google Fiber에 대한 이야기로 넘어갔었는데요.

시덥잖은 이야기들을 한 것으로봐서, 그냥 오스틴에 구글 파이버가 있어서 말을 꺼낸 것이 아닌가 싶음.

 

 

(3) 학생들 질문들 관련 답변 (후반 30분) - 답변 위주로 적겠습니다. 

 

1. 머신러닝이 발전하면 앞으로 개개인에 맞춰서 서비스 가능할 듯

2. 기술이 엄청 발전하는데, Education의 가치가 의심스럽다.  내 학위가 앞으로도 얼마나 가치있을까?
=> 앞으로 더 중요해 질 듯. 특히 리더쉽 측면에서 매우 중요. 난 지금도 배우는 중

3. Google is famous for Design First. 

Google’s strategy is to keep innovation. 
 
4. What keeps you awake?
=> Socially responsible innovation that helps people.
 
5. In your opinion, which emerging technology has the greatest potential?
=> Artificial intelligence business will have the greatest potential. Machine learning will touch every business, including medicine, entertainment, etc.

 
6. What made your education different? 
=> I liked computer a lot when I was 15 years old. I was a nude. My father was a professor.
 
7. What kind of venture company do you like to recommend?
=> Can’t make a decision without contexts of challenges. Try to think about where do you want to live? Who do you want to live with?

 What is the right business plan for you?
 
8. Platform Business 관련 질문
=> If you become a founder, think about platform business. 

 

9. We are so positive for AI. However, it seems that there will be lots of problems from AI. 

=> Those are long-term issues. AI may be harmful for unemployment problems but not obvious.

 

중간에 모 백인 남자애가 벌벌 떨면서 질문을 재대로 못한 바람에 시간을 좀 끌었고 (왜 나섰는지는 모르겠지만), 

신변잡기 수준의 질문들을 거르면 질의응답은 대충 이정도 였던 것 같습니다. 

질의 응답 시간이 다 끝나고 

행사를 마무리하면서 사회자는 오스틴이 왜 스타트업 하기에 매우 좋은 곳인지를 설명하는데 시간을 보내더군요. 

학생들이 질문할 때 자기소개 하는거보니까 전공도 다양하고 스타트업에 전혀 관심없는 사람도 많던데, 

이런 것으로 시간을 많이 보내는게 조금은 아쉬웠습니다. 

 

아무튼 에릭 아저씨는 마지막으로 Intellectual curiosity를 다시 한 번 강조한 후,  

Whatever your interest is, build something. Make it happen.
